Bio
Matthew Crowe is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in Cary, North Carolina. "I am obsessed with the process of songwriting or maybe posessed by the spirit of songwriting". His genre is grounded in folk/americana/country/pop. Some of the songwriters that have inspired him include Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers.
His father, a jazz fan, is very accomplished jazz piano player. Growing up, hearing him play songs like, "Take Five" by Dave Bruebeck or classic standards like "Misty". Matthew's patriarchal grandfather was a professional opera singer. His older brother, multi-talented, is an amazing piano/keyboard player, singer-songwriter and teaches music.
Matthew really took to playing music at the early age of fourteen by first playing his older brothers drum set and becoming the professional drummer in the family. "My older brother could still possibly harbor a resentment over that one". First, playing in punk bands. One particular band, "Worm Art" was an opening act for the prolific band Nirvana. Then a drummer for a folk-rock band, "Earthworms", he switched instruments to guitar/mandolin and co-wrote songs with two other members of the band. Earthworms had some reasonable success playing and opening for such acts as Rusted Root, Richie Havens and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
He has been songwriting since the age of thirteen. His first song being a country song entitled "Tell Me". In the last few years he has decided to write and record again. Releasing two EP's and a few singles since 2022. His recent release on new Years day of 2025, "Absolutely Nothing" got some attention. This song was written about a interview/testimonial from the YouTube channel the Soft White Underbelly. Through contact, the curator of the channel, Mark Laita, mentioned he loved the song and may be using it. Here is a review of the song from media outlet "The Concert Chronicles".
-The Concert Chronicles- Thank you for sending us this poignant, emotionally charged ballad that resonates with the raw vulnerability and complexity of the human connection. At its core, "Absolutely Nothing" is a narrative-driven piece that delves into themes of despair, resilience, and the search for meaning amidst hardship. Crowe's lyrics reflect the intimate and confessional tone of a conversation, mirroring the candid storytelling style of "Soft White Underbelly." The arrangement is stripped back yet profoundly effective, placing Crowe's evocative voice and acoustic guitar at the forefront. His fingerpicked guitar work creates a delicate foundation, with minor key progressions that enhance the song's melancholic atmosphere. "Absolutely Nothing" is a powerful showcase of Crowe's talent for crafting emotionally resonate music.
Currently, Matthew performs locally in the Raleigh-Durham area in North Carolina. He performs his original music as a solo act and musicians for accompaniment. Also, offers a myriad of services from playing music venues, house shows, corporate events, weddings, breweries, wineries, festivals, and even yoga events. He plays a wide range of cover music as well, performing whimsical folk-country versions of "Jump" by Van halen, "Could You Be Loved" by Bob Marley and even "Shake it Off" by Taylor Swift.
